Why Shouting "Keep It on the Ground!" Doesn't Work
Every weekend across South Africa, frustrated parents and coaches stand along the boundary ropes watching promising junior batsmen get caught out at mid-off, mid-on, or cover point. The instruction yelled from the sideline is almost always: "Play with a straight bat!" or "Keep it along the ground!"
Here is the reality: a junior player cannot keep the ball on the ground if their bottom hand is locked in a death grip. When the bottom hand dominates, the bat cannot travel on a vertical pendulum. It is forced into a horizontal arc, flicking the toe of the bat up at the exact point of impact.
The Mechanics: Top Hand Directs, Bottom Hand Supports
In professional cricket batting, the two hands have completely distinct responsibilities in the kinetic chain:
Merrick Brett's 14-Day Home Grip Progression
10 to 15 minutes a day • Backyard, driveway, or living room ready • Zero expensive gear
This micro-routine isolates top-hand leverage without needing a bowling machine or full nets. Practice takes just 10 to 15 minutes a day:
sports_cricket Drill 1: Ground Pickup Routine
Place the bat face-down on the grass. Pick it up naturally with top hand first, followed by bottom hand. Check both 'V's align down the spine.
fitness_center Drill 2: 1-Hand Tee Drives
Remove bottom hand completely. From a batting tee, strike 15 stationary tennis balls down the ground using only top hand, holding high finish.
touch_app Drill 3: The 2-Finger Ghost Grip
Return bottom hand, but touch handle with ONLY thumb and forefinger. Strike 20 drop-feeds directly into a target cone along the turf carpet.
video_camera_front Drill 4: 120 FPS Video Review
Record slow-motion side-on video of 6 straight drives against underarm feeds. Check bat verticality and upload for Merrick's review.
